L6.12 ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY
Resources - Computer Multimedia

A number of computer multimedia resources are available that support training in atomic absorption spectroscopy for chemical laboratory technicians.

  1. Handbook of Instrumental Techniques for Analytical Chemistry CD-ROM
This supplement to the "Handbook of Instrumental Techniques for Analytical Chemistry", Prentice-Hall, 1997, written by Frank Settle, can be used in several ways.  In the first mode, users follow a series of menus to describe both the characteristics of their samples and the information they desire from the sample.  They then receive references to appropriate analysis techniques describe in the text.  In the second mode, they can select from a listing of techniques discussed in the book to obtain quick information about each method’s applicability, including the characteristics of samples it can analyze, and the types of information the analysis provides.
  2. Spectrophotometry and Beer's Law
This software package, distributed by ScienceMedia, Inc, (ScienceMedia, Inc., 6540 Lusk Blvd. Suite C-148, San Diego, CA 92121) provides a working model of a spectrophotometer as well as explorations and animations about the theory of light absorption, the relationship between energy and light at the atomic level and Beer's Law. While oriented towards UV/Vis spectrophotometry, the concepts are similar to those for atomic absorption spectroscopy. (CD-ROM for Mac or PC)
  3. Interactive Training Atomic Absorption Spectrometry
ChemSW (Chemistry Software for Windows) offers this software package that "gives comprehensive descriptions, with animated, interactive demonstrations, of the principles, instrumentation and practical applications of Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, with self-test multiple choice questions on each module." For Windows 3.1, 95, 98 or NT. It is also available from other vendors, such as ChromTech, and SIS Scientific Software. However, the "experienced practical atomic spectroscopist" who wrote the software is not identified in any of the information sheets.
  4. Basic Atomic Absorption
This outstanding software training package, produced by Fred Delles (retired) of Varian Instruments (1998) and written using Macromedia, provides extensive coverage atomic absorption including history, theory, instrument design, flame, furnace, and vapor generation methods, background correction, and an extensive glossary.
