L6.13 GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY
Resources - Video and Audio

A number of videos are available that support gas chromatography for Chemical Laboratory Technology.  Below are those which have been identified by the Gas Chromatography Module Development Team as being particularly useful.

1. Basic Aspects of Gas Chromatography:
Troubleshooting by the Chromatogram Video Program GC-2 by D. Blacha.

Available from Savant, this video provides special focus on troubleshooting.  Topics include the relationship between retention time and resolution to the characterization of mixtures, the relationship of column length to separation, troubleshooting root causes of problems, and identification of instrument malfunctions that occur at the computer interface.

2. BASIC GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY, 2nd Edition.
This two-part video uses live sequences for beginners as well as experts wishing to fine-tune their skills.  Topics include definitions, schematic chromatographic columns, samples, applications, qualitative and quantitative results, carrier gas, flow control, column temperature, data systems, and more.  The video, while no longer available from the American Chemical Society, may be found in libraries and other reference sources.

3. Capillary Columns in Gas Chromatography Video Program GC-102,  by H. M. McNair.  Available from Savant, this video covers the following topics: principles of GC as a separation tool, uses of GC as an analytical tool, components of a gas chromatograph, relationship between retention time and resolution to the characterization of mixtures, identification of detectors (including thermal conductivity, flame ionization, and electron capture in terms of their use, detection limits, and special characteristics), relationship of column length to separation, characteristics of a variety of column types in terms of packing material and construction material, identification of a variety of column packings, and characterization of a variety of injection ports and the usefulness of each for gases and liquids.

4. Principles of Gas Chromatography Video Program GC-101, by H.M. McNair.
This video, available from Savant, covers a variety of topics including principles of GC, components of a gas chromatograph, retention time and resolution, detectors, and the types and effects of a variety of columns in terms of packing material and construction material.

5. Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis by Gas Chromatography Video Program GC-104, by H. M. McNair.

This video, available from Savant covers topics such as the use a variety of gas chromatographs to analyze known and unknown mixtures, the use of calibration techniques when performing instrumental analysis, how to perform calibrations using available instruments and plot appropriate graphs, and the identification of the linear portion of a calibration curve.
