L6.13 GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY
Resources - Computer and WWW Multimedia

A number of multimedia resources are available that support gas chromatography for Chemical Laboratory Technology.  Below are those which have been identified by the Gas Chromatography Module Development Team as being particularly useful.

  1. Handbook of Instrumental Techniques for Analytical Chemistry CD-ROM
This supplement to the "Handbook of Instrumental Techniques for Analytical Chemistry", Prentice-Hall, 1997, written by Frank Settle, can be used in several ways.  In the first mode, users follow a series of menus to describe both the characteristics of their samples and the information they desire from the sample.  They then receive references to appropriate analysis techniques describe in the text.  In the second mode, they can select from a listing of techniques discussed in the book to obtain quick information about each method’s applicability, including the characteristics of samples it can analyze, and the types of information the analysis provides.
  2. Interactive Training Gas Chromatography
ChemSW (Chemistry Software for Windows) offers several software packages for training or analysis using GC, for Windows 3.1, 95, 98 or NT. The GC and Advanced GC courses are an introduction to basic and more advanced principles and instrumentation. The floppy disk-based courses are written using Toolbook and are fairly short with a limited number of animations and no photographs of instrumentation. However, they provide a good review of concepts.
  3. Chemistry Modules of Richmond (C-MoR) : Gas Chromatography 1.0
Developed at the University of Richmond, C-MoR uses computer models to illustrate core topics in the chemistry curriculum.  The Gas Chromatography 1.0 is designed to be used as a supplement to a classroom setting by an instructor.  Topics covered include gas chromatography, injection, separation, detection, temperature, flow rate, and columns. To access information about obtaining this: CD-ROM
  4. Introduction of Gas Chromatography, CGC-10
Made in 1996, this is an interactive computer software package available from Savant. Topics include: principles of gas chromatography, uses of GC as an analytical tool, components of a gas chromatograph, the relationship between retention time and resolution to the characterization of mixtures, detectors and detector limits, the effects of column length and separation, characteristics of a variety of column types, types of column packings, characterization of types of injection ports and the usefulness of each, and more.
  5. START GC - Gas Chromatography and Its Applications
This is an unusually comprehensive survey of GC and applications, from the basics to the highly advanced, compiled by graduate student.in Korea.
  6. The University of Wisconsin ChemPages Laboratory Resources
The GC module contains a number of large Quicktime movies illustrating the operation of a GC.
  7. LCGC Magazine
The troubleshooting section provides a number of useful hints for technicians working in GC.
  8. J&W Scientific
The GC reference section provides a comprehensive overview of GC operations as well as valuable tips for installing and maintaining columns.
