Specific Competency 6

Relate the effects of column length to separation

The technician should understand the variables that can be changed in order to increase resolution and improve separation. They should understand that increasing retention on the column can be accomplished by reducing the column temperature or lengthening the column, but that there are disadvantages to these approaches as well. They should be able to decide when to use isothermal conditions and when temperature programming is required.
